Prior to their trek west, many of the early Saints had sacrificed everything to come to Zion. Most could not afford oxen, horses, or the comfort of a covered wagon for the 1,300 mile journey from Nauvoo, Illinois to the Great Salt Lake Valley; and instead opted for a handcart.
In addition to fatigue, illness, hunger, and exposure to the elements, pushing and pulling a handcart was often a challenge in itself. With calloused and bleeding hands, those early pioneers persevered while pushing and pulling their supplies, belongings, and family members across the vast American plains, which was often a 5 - 6 month journey.
Though their trials were difficult, many of these early Saints were able to experience divine miracles and grew closer to God through their suffering. Between 1856 and 1860 these 3,000+ "Handcart Saints"created an enduring legacy of faith, sacrifice, and resilience in overcoming the challenges of their journey.
Today, as we seek to overcome our own challenges on life's journey, the symbol of the handcart can remind us of everything that our ancestors and the early Saints sacrificed on our behalf, so that we could know and experience the power and blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and His covenant path.
