Living a Life Outside the Box

Sometimes we are afraid to find inspiration in places outside of our comfort zone. I received an invitation from a friend this holiday season to attend a play she was performing in at her church. Right away I marked it on my calendar and was excited to go see her perform and feel of the Spirit. A couple days later I learned of others in our circle who had also been invited but were hesitant to attend because they weren't comfortable being in a church that was of another religion. They felt some anxiety about it and worried that the members might put them on the spot about their beliefs and put them in an awkward position.

The friend who was performing in the play had attended my daughter's baptism earlier this year and she was also a bit uncomfortable being in our church and feeling some anxiety. Instead of sitting with our family she sat in the back. When it came time for pictures she exited the building and hid in the parking lot until it was time to go. She felt great anxiety - the same fears our circle of friends were feeling about going to her church.

I found it interesting that most people don't have a problem inviting others to events at their church, but when the coin is flipped - they aren't as comfortable or thrilled being the one invited. This, along with some other recent events inspired me to make this video. Because I am a person who lives outside of the box, I am excited to gain from others who are not of my same faith. I think most people that know me would be surprised to see the list of books I read, the mentors I follow, and the videos I watch, because they are from a variety of sources that have religious differences. I enjoy hearing how others of different faiths deal with issues that I can relate with - parenting, marriage, standing up for what you believe in, increasing faith and hope, etc. I love hearing different perspectives and often receive helpful insight that I had never thought of before. I have come to learn that we have more in common than we do differences. Our values, our goals, our dreams, our hopes, our love for God, are the bridge that can bring us together.

We don't have to agree on doctrinal issues or feel that our faith may be in jeopardy if we open ourselves to understand another's perspective. It's that fear that keeps us held back in our lives. It's that fear that influences our level of happiness. I have witnessed those within my own church allowing fear or lack of understanding to keep them from experiencing some beautiful opportunities and even friendships. Also, I have witnessed others from outside of my church, doing the same.

There was a time in my life when I was afraid to live outside of my box. Then I learned that when you put limits on the Spirit, you put limits on your own spiritual growth. When we step outside of what we are comfortable and familiar with, we can experience soaring to greater heights of happiness!

Upcoming Class!

I am so excited to announce this class that I get to host next Thursday! If you've attended any of my classes or follow my blogs you have most likely heard me talk about Misty, the incredible lady who walked up to me as a complete stranger about 18 months ago and said, "I have a message for you". That message lined me up with my purpose of teaching/leading. She has amazing spiritual gifts and a beautiful soul, and I believe she is the most in-tuned to the Spirit person I have ever met. Every moment I get to spend talking with her, I am blessed beyond measure. How our paths crossed was Divinely inspired!
Misty let me choose what topic she should speak on at this workshop and here's what I picked. This will be a class that you won't want to miss!

Lessons I learned from Children and Dancing!

Yes, it's true - aside from the semester of Ballroom I took back in High School, I've never had dance lessons in my entire life! In fact, I once did a biography report in High School on Paula Abdul for a Women's Studies class and a friend of mine from another High School taught me one of Paula's dances. We were going to perform it together in class, at the end of my presentation. I froze up and forgot all the moves and my friend ended up dancing solo.

Dancing is something I generally do in my kitchen, or in a crowd of fellow dancers (who also haven't had lessons). But truth be told, there's something about dancing that makes me feel so alive and have so much fun! In fact, I'm usually on a happiness high for hours following. Knowing that dancing is always sure to evoke laughter and burn calories, I don't understand why we all don't do it more often.

It's funny, if you've ever watched small children and noticed how they just don't care whether or not they are good at dancing (or singing), they do it anyways. When they hear music, they just dance - and it doesn't matter whose watching. As adults, for some reason we lose that confidence. We put up our guard and are a bit more hesitant to show the world our vulnerable side. We care what people think about us and want them to see our best side at all times. Afraid to step out of our shell and comfort zone, we end up missing out on a lot of opportunities to have fun. There's a lot we can learn from children -

  • Be confident in yourself no matter what.
  • Having fun keeps you young.
  • Instead of finding the excuses not to do something, look for the excuses to DO it!
  • Even if you're the only one dancing, you know you're making someone smile.
  • It doesn't matter if you're off beat or out of sync, it only matters that you're having fun.

This week for a Young Women youth activity at my church, we had a dance-off. All three age groups competed against each other. The YW president and I both laughed at how neither of us were dancers but that didn't stop us. Our cute Laurel class and us leaders choreographed this short little dance, and for only having 15 minutes to put it together, I think we rocked it!

So here's a fun tip for you. The next time you're feeling a little down, pick a fun song, get your camera out and film yourself dancing. You'll have so much fun watching it, even if you never show a soul! One thing is for certain - it WILL make you smile. If you're brave enough to share with others I'd love for you to post your videos on the Happy Lady facebook page - you never know whose day you might brighten and who you might inspire!
